Bachmann announce Coal Tower too!

They were once common-place , and now model-form is about to imitate real-life, as Bachmann announce a concrete locomotive coaling tower as an exciting addition to it's Scenecraft range of resin model buildings for 2010.

This fully detailed model is closely based on the well-known facility at Carnforth shed in Lancashire. The actual tower is still standing and can be seen for many miles around.

The tower serves two tracks , and allows up to 4 steam engines to be coaled at once. The model will include prototypical control cabins, which actually used a primitive form of computerisation to distribute coal in the required amount to locos being serviced.

A non-working coal wagon lifting cradle is also included with the model.  A light texture has been used to simulate the concrete construction of the original, with painting and weathering applied by hand. Catwalks, handrails and ladders will also be included. Development is already well advanced on this model, which is proving to be Scenecraft's most complicated structure to date.

Delivery is expected in the 2nd quarter of the year.

David Haarhaus, Bachmann Sales and Marketing Manager, said " We were lucky enough to visit the West Coast Railways depot at Carnforth in order to make a sound recording of Leander for our forthcoming sound-fitted Branchline Jubilee 'Kolhapur'. I have many happy childhood memories of the Steam Town Museum as it was back then, seeing that iconic coaling tower again inspired us to reproduce it in model form. Standing at over 30cm tall, this magnificent model will complement the high level of detail that is incorporated into our Branchline steam locomotives."

The announcement of this model follows hot-on-the-heels of Hornby's previously announced model of a coaling tower as part of their 2010 range on Christmas Day.

More images of Bachmann's Scenecraft Coaling Tower can be found on the ' New Products Gallery ' page.

James May's Toy Stories

Just a reminder that the James May Toy Stories episode featuring the record breaking attempt to relay rail track between Bideford and Barnstaple is CHRISTMAS DAY at 7pm on BBC TWO.

The day involved Hornby supplying over 19,000 yards of '00' flexible track, their model of the Hitachi 'Javelin' unit attempting to link the towns despite very changeable weather and anti-social behaviour!

If it's anything like previous programmes in the series - you can't afford to miss it - the perfect end to Christmas Day!!

NRM launches City of Truro!

The National Railway Museum has launched it's 2nd exclusive '00' gauge model locomotive, manufactured by Bachmann Europe Plc.

The subject, this time, is a steam locomotive in the form of the popular Great Western 4-4-0 'City of Truro'. This all-new Bachmann Branchline model was launched alongside it's full-size counterpart at the Gloucester & Warwickshire Railway.

No. 3440 was one of ten locomotives built at the GWR's Swindon Works between March and May 1903. It achieved 'celebrity status' in the railway world after it was alleged to have been the first locomotive to have been recorded at a speed of over 100 mph!

The '00' model has been produced exclusively for the NRM just in time for Christmas, and is available through the Museum shop and online at www.nrmshop.co.uk .

'City of Truro' follows in the footsteps of the prototype Deltic locomotive produced exclusively for the NRM by Bachmann, and which proved incredibly popular with railway modellers around the World. It continues the museum's policy of producing models of full-size locos in the National Collection that tell a story.

2 versions of the model are being produced. Initially, it is available as a limited platinum edition in a special platinum coloured box, with a certificate and plinth on which to display the model. This version is available at £195 plus postage & packaging. A standard model will also be produced later in a standard Bachmann/NRM box complete with history of the loco on the rear sleeve.

Each sale will support the NRM in it's vital work in preserving  Britain's railway heritage, and providing public access to the national collections.

Bachmann's  PowerHaul Powerhouse!

Bachmann Europe Plc has announced that it's been granted an exclusive licence to produce models of the new Freightliner 'PowerHaul' Class 70 locomotives.

The announcement was made to coincide with the UK arrival of the first of these powerful new machines from GE Transportation in the USA.

These new 75mph Co-Co locomotives feature innovative designs such as Dynamic Braking and AC traction technology and will be utilised across all parts of the extensive Freightliner route network.

The first two of these 129 tonne locomotives were unveiled to invited guests on the 8th November at Newport docks. Philippa Brooks, Freightliner Head of Communications said, "Bachmann have a proven track record in producing high quality models of modern rolling stock. They already supply Freightliner models in N, 00 and G scales, and we look forward to seeing the models of our newest addition to the Freightliner fleet.

David Haarhaus, Bachmann Europe Plc Sales & Marketing Manager said, " We are delighted that Freightliner has given us the responsibility of reproducing their striking new 'PowerHaul' locomotive in model form. I feel this is in recognition of the constant progress that our Branchline 00 and Graham Farish N scale ranges have achieved over the last 20 years."

Development work is already underway and 'PowerHaul' models will be included in the 2010 Branchline and Graham Farish ranges. A very special, limited edition Branchline 00 model of the class leader, 70 001 'POWERHAUL' will be available exclusively through www.freightliner.co.uk

Farish BDA appears!

The first Engineering Prototype (EP) samples of the new Graham Farish BDA bogie bolster wagon have arrived at Barwell for evaluation.

British Railways built a large number of the wagons between 1949 and 1962. The 52ft long version was originally known as a Bogie Bolster D. Following the move to air braked trains after 1964, 1250 of these were rebuilt to become BDA bogie bolster wagons under the TOPS system, the first vehicle being converted at Swindon in 1975.

BDA's were used for the transport of mainly metal products such as steel rods, but, with the decline of that traffic those remaining are used in departmental service mainly carrying rail to and from work sites. 388 BDA wagons were still in service on the national network in 2008.

Three versions will be released by Graham Farish as follows:

  • 377-600 in Loadhaul livery with heavy duty bolsters & stanchions
  • 377-601 in BR Railfreight livery with standard bolsters & stanchions plus bogies with handbrake wheel
  • 377-602 in EWS livery with heavy duty bolsters & stanchions

The model is designed so you can fit the stanchions as desired to suit different loads.

All wagons are fitted with NEM coupling pockets. The accessory pack includes a load comprising two steel girders  and a complete spare set of stanchions.

Farish announces Class 14 at Warley!

Bachmann Europe plc has announced that it is to produce a Class 14 diesel loco as part of the rapidly expanding Graham Farish N scale range.

Samples produced from the completed tooling were on show on the Bachmann stand at the Warley National Model Railway exhibition held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

Affectionately known by enthusiasts as 'Teddy Bears' the name was derived from the comment made by a foreman at Swindon Works who having been involved with the only GWR pacific 'The Great Bear' decreed that they were now reduced to building Teddy Bears!

British Rail's Swindon Works built 56 locomotives between 1964 and 1965. However, they weren't a great success and were only allocated to three depots, namely Cardiff Canton, Hull Dairycoates and Swansea Llandore. The first loco was withdrawn in December 1967 and the last in April 1969. 48 were sold for industrial use seeing service in collieries, oil refineries, steel works and cement works...some seeing service in Belgium and Spain. 19 of the class have been preserved following industrial use.

Three versions of the model will be released during 2010 as part of the expanding Blue Riband range:

  • 372-950   D9555 in BR Green
  • 372-951   D9523 in BR Green (weathered)
  • 372-952   14029 in BR Blue *

* Although the class were given TOPS class designation, none of them carried TOPS 5-digit numbers in BR service. 14029 is the number that would have been carried by D9529 had it remained in service with BR long enough to carry it. No. 14029 was initially carried by this locomotive at the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway and subsequently when hired to the Channel Tunnel High Speed Line 1 project.

The Model weighs over 50 grammes to enhance tractive effort. Each one comes with a detailing pack that allows the complete buffer beam to be correctly modelled by removing the coupling. (NEM coupling pockets are provided) Details include alternative buffer beam detail, vacuum and air pipes and shunter's pole.

It will be available with the original bonnets fitted with twin character headcode boxes or replacement end doors plus cab and bonnet details.

Bachmann's Class 47 'breaks cover'!

More decorated samples of Bachmann's forthcoming Class 47 '00' scale releases were on display at the National Warley Model Railway Exhibition over the weekend (21/22 Nov 2009).

Amongst them were 31-605S 47 975 'The Institution of Civil Engineers' in Dutch livery. This is a limited edition of just 512 models:

(a decorated sample of Class 57 315 in Arriva Trains Wales livery can also be glimpsed above it!)

31-605Z 47 835 'Windsor Castle' was also on display. Originally commissioned by Antics, this is also a limited edition of just 512 models, and features the loco in it's InterCity Swallow livery 'Royal Train' guise (as carried from 1989), following it's naming by HM the Queen in 1985 to commemorate the 150th anniversary year of the Great Western Railway.

Other new models on display included undecorated samples of the new JPA bogie cement wagons and the IPA Car Transporter:

(Apologies for photo quality - lighting conditions at the NEC and the fact models were in display cabinets was not ideal!)

Heljan's new 'Baby'..and more!

Heljan has confirmed (at Warley MRE) that it is to produce an '00' scale model of the Class 23 'Baby' Deltic!

Only 10 of the prototype locos were built and were used on suburban services out of London's Kings Cross. The '00' scale model is expected during 2010 and will be available with the later 4-character headcode in both BR Green and BR Blue liveries.

A theme is starting to develop with recent (and still-to-come) releases including, Kestrel, Falcon, Class 17 and Class 14.

Following these, Heljan has announced it's intention to produce the BRC&W prototype 'LION'. Although it only enjoyed a brief working life with BR, it's unique white livery has ensured it's place in railway history. Research is currently underway with a release envisaged in 2011 for the model.

In addition, Heljan is also planning to get into buses - Railbuses that is!

Currently under development are:

  • Waggon and Maschinen AG E79960-4
  • Wickham SC79965-9
  • Park Royal M79970-4
  • AC Cars W79975-9

These are all planned for release in 2010/11

Also, due to demand, the popular Class 52 'Western' '00' gauge locos are set for a return in 2010. Whilst these won't be 'limited editions', they will be small production runs, and the following are planned:

  • 5213   D1000 'Western Enterprise' in Desert sand livery with small yellow panels
  • 5214   D1001 'Western Pathfinder' in gloss maroon livery with small yellow panels
  • 5215   D1012 'Western Firebrand' in maroon livery with full yellow ends
  • 5216   D1023 'Western Fusilier' in blue livery with full yellow ends and marker dots

The Warley MRE also provided the opportunity for Heljan to showcase progress on models already under development including test shots of the '00' Class 15 and decorated and assembled '0' gauge Class 20's and Mk1 Carriages.

Heljan's '0' gauge BR Green Class 20

Heljan's '0' gauge BR Blue Class 20

Heljan's '0' gauge Mk 1 coach (apologies for quality of photo - light in the NEC was poor at times)

Exciting times!

Finally, replacement chassis for the faulty Class 17 models released earlier this year are now available. Heljan has produced a video tutorial to aid the replacement process which can be found on their website ( www.heljan.dk ) and on our videos page.

Bachmann Developments

Bachmann has posted images of development work on it's '00' scale models of the MBA and MOA wagons, following release of the Dapol MBA & MCA wagons.

As expected, comparisons between the 2 manufacturers models will be inevitable, and Bachmann is already extolling the virtues of it's new wagons.

The models will include enhanced bodywork detail, including bevelled top edge and corner detail, external ladders and etched plate-end details. Bogie detail includes in-line brake blocks, recessed suspension springs and all models will feature NEM wheel profiles.

In addition, the wagons will feature a precision diecast spine as part of the complex underframe detail, which will improve the wagons stability when in use. Detailing includes air pipe runs, air reservoir, weighing scales and operating levers.

The wagons will be supplied fitted with working buckeye couplings as per the prototype and will be available as follows:

  • 38-240  MBA with buffers
  • 38-241  MBA without buffers
  • 38-245  MOA with buffers

All models will be available in EWS livery and RRP for each is £20.25

Also, work is now well-advanced on Bachmann's '00' scale model of the VTG-built JPA powder cement wagon.

The Branchline model will incorporate many intricate details, including stainless steel catwalk grab handles along the upper surface, a multitude of underframe pipework and other apparatus. The models will feature the two prototypical styles of discharging equipment.

Kestrel Configuration Conundrum!

Heljan has issued instructions for DCC users regarding it's latest release of the '00' scale model of 'Kestrel'.

The manufacturer has identified a potential problem regarding the onboard directional lighting system, and as a result , a number of Configuration Variables (CVs) will need to be changed to enable the lights to function correctly on the models.

A pdf instruction sheet has been issued and is available to download from their website ( www.heljan.dk ) identifying the relevant CVs that require changing. Only a small selection of decoders has so far been tested , and Heljan are recommending that only DCC decoders that allow the relevant CVs to be changed, be used.

Note: this only affects users of DCC systems

New 'N' Gauge Coupling

L/E DB Schenker Class 37!

After months of behind-the-scenes negotiations, Rail Express magazine has revealed details of another loco to add to it's ever-increasing portfolio of limited edition models.

The latest release, due in March next year, will be a '00' scale Bachmann Class 37/5 in the freshly-applied red livery of DB Schenker. The magazine has obtained official agreement from the Berlin headquarters of the German-owned freight operator to reproduce it's logo and colour-scheme.

Work on the new model is already underway with Bachmann, and the subject will be 37 670 'St Blazey T&RS Depot'.   It will feature wire handrails, opening cab doors, LED directional lighting, larger bogie brake cylinders, etched roof fan grill as standard, together with a set of stainless steel nameplates to fix over the printed ones if desired.

Because, in effect, no new tooling is required a quick turn round at Bachmann's China factory has been secured.

It will be available as a numbered and certificated limited edition of 1,000 models, and a sound-fitted option is available, dependant on demand.

The price has been set at £76.95 (plus P&P) for the standard DCC ready model and £166.95 (plus P&P) for the sound-fitted option.

Model Construction Company Collapses

It's sad to report that the German model construction company, Faller, has filed for insolvency.

Faller was founded after the Second World War by brothers Edwin and Hermann Faller. The company employed around 130 staff, and was, until a few years ago, one of the largest operations in the Black Forest region.

Financial problems had been evident for some time.

In the model railway world Faller enjoyed an excellent reputation and produced a veritable cornucopia of model buildings and accessories. It diversified into cars and aeroplanes, and it's Faller Car-System of moving cars and trucks was innovative, and may be sorely missed.

With waning customer interest in model railways in Germany the financial situation for the company has become difficult, and insolvency administrator, Volker Grub from Stuttgart has been appointed to oversee affairs.

The European model railway manufacturing industry is in turmoil with the current economic downturn, we'll have to wait and see what the future holds for Faller..

World Record Attempt - derailed...

Top Gear TV presenter James May is on a mission to celebrate Britain's best loved toys, and celebrate them on a massive scale - with Hornby taking centre stage!

Hornby are to feature in three of the six programmes due to be shown on BBC Two in the run up to Christmas.

In James's mission to engage today's kids with classic toys from his own childhood, he has already built life size Airfix kits of a Battle of Britain Spitfire and Chieftain Tank at RAF Cosworth in Shropshire. Then, thanks to 130 volunteers and the Scalextric team he constructed and raced a 2.75 mile Scalextric track on the site of the Brooklands racing circuit - setting a new world record.

On Monday (24th August), with the help of volunteers and model railway enthusiasts from around the country, he attempted to reopen the disused railway line between Barnstaple and Bideford railway stations - in 00 scale, and in so doing, tried to set a World Record!  Eight pallet loads of Hornby track (including over 19,000 lengths of flexi-track) had to be laid along the 10 mile route before the locomotives and rolling stock could begin their journey. A journey not undertaken by a locomotive of any kind for over 40 years.

Hornby's Marketing Manager Simon Kohler said "This is a huge project involving 200 to 300 people that has involved the whole community and various councils. The line has to be laid along what is now a cycle track, where even a pebble can cause huge problems. Considering it all has to be laid and then taken down the same day, this is a huge project and certainly a milestone in the history of the brand".

Sadly, the World Record wasn't achieved, with the final train (a decorated sample of Hornby's forthcoming Javelin) making it just a couple of miles short of it's destination late on Monday night. The attempt wasn't without it's challenges which included foul weather, 'coins on the line' and a few lengths of track being stolen en route!

Look out for James May's Toy Stories on BBC 2 later this year. (25/08/09)

Heljan Class 17 latest..

Heljan has issued the following statement regarding the replacement chassis' for it's recently-released '00' scale Class 17 loco, which has been the subject of much criticism:

"Unfortunately there has been a further delay to the delivery of the replacement chassis's for the faulty examples of the class 17. We are keen to ensure that the replacement units are satisfactory and sourcing a suitable motor has proved more difficult than we originally thought.

Indications are that we should be able to ship new chassis's to retailers who have requested replacements for their customers by November 1st, please accept our apologies for this further delay.

To avoid further inconvenience there will be no need to return the faulty chassis units upon exchange."

Also, a video of Heljan's forthcoming '0' gauge Mk 1 coaches (albeit pre-production samples) has been released via YouTube, and can be accessed via our Videos page. A closer inspection can be had at the Telford '0' Gauge exhibition on September 5th & 6th.

"This is a great honour for Hornby and an important development for the group.  We are delighted to have been granted such a broadly based licence to develop a range of products linked to the 2012 London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games - the world's largest sporting events. We have an excellent portfolio of iconic brands and products that are a superb fit with London 2012.  We have some very exciting plans that we are developing with LOCOG to create official merchandise that will demonstrate the very best of London and the Games."

"We look forward to launching the London 2012 ranges, which we are confident will be very popular, both to collectors in the UK and with overseas visitors. The first products will be on sale before Christmas this year"  (23/07/09)
